APPLE IS REPLACING FAULTY HARD DRIVES
FRUIT THEMED
Apple is offering to replace a number of Seagate 1TB hard drives that were included in its Imacs but don't work very well.
According to a statement the firm said it has determined there are problems with a small number of the drives that it sold in the last couple of months. Apple said that under certain conditions the drives could fail.
"Apple has determined that a very small number of Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems, may fail under certain conditions. These systems were sold between May 2011 and July 2011," it said in a statement on its hardware support pages.
"Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge."
Apple said that it would contact any Mac owners that gave it a valid email address during contact registration to advise them of the drive swap. Anyone who didn't, or prefers to be a bit more pro-active, can enter their Mac serial number on Apple's hardware support page
APPLE I pad-Facebook app:
An iPad-specific version of Facebook's official iOS app has been discovered.
Some clever Apple fanatics managed to discover that code for the iPad version of the long-awaited official Apple Facebook app was embedded within the code of the iPhone app, which was released earlier this year.
The discovery occurred after Facebook released an update to the iPhone app, which included a handful of minor changes to the untrained eye, but obviously it also updated the app such that it now uses the same kind of code for both iPhone and iPad content.
Tech Crunch reports that the leaked iPad version of the app will have a special menu on the left-hand side of the screen for seamless access to all of the social network site's main features.
In addition, the site found that the code itself has changed from a proprietary iOS format to a combination of native code and HTML5, which is a more universal Web-based language.
AIR INTO WATER
Air Into Water
- Johathan Ritchey has invented the Watermill, which is an atmospheric water generator. It converts air into fresh water.
- This latest technology invention produces fresh water at a cost of about 3 cents a liter (1 quart). Originally designed for areas that do not have clean drinking water, the Watermill is for households that prefer an eco-friendly, cost effective alternative to bottled water.
- Atmospheric water generators convert air into water when the temperature of the air becomes saturated with enough water vapor that it begins to condense (dew point).
- "What is unique about the Watermill is that it has intelligence," says Ritche. This makes the appliance more efficient. It samples the air every 3 minutes to determine the most efficient time to convert the air into water.
- It will also tell you when to change the carbon filter and will shut itself off if it cannot make pure clean water.
CLOUD COMPUTING
- Cloud Computing
- Analysts predict that by 2014 the latest technology inventions related to cloud computing will significantly influence how we use our computers.
- Cloud computing is where tasks and file storage on your computer are performed and stored elsewhere
- By using an internet connection you can connect to a service that has the architecture, infrastructure and software to manage any task or storage requirement at less cost.
- The advantages of cloud computing is that it eliminates the difficulty and expense of maintaining, upgrading and scaling your own computer hardware and software while increasing efficiency, speed and resources.
- Your computer's processing speed, memory capacity, software applications and maintenance requirements are minimized.
- You could store and access any size or type of file, play games, use or develop applications, render videos, word process, make scientific calculations, or anything you want, by simply using a smart phone.
- As a comparison, let's say you had to generate your own electricity. You would need to maintain, upgrade and scale these resources as required to meet your demands. This would be expensive and time consuming.
- Cloud computing could be compared to how a utility provides electricity. It has the architecture, infrastructure, applications, expertise and resources to generate this service for you. You just connect to their grid.
- Microsoft, IBM and Google are some of the companies that are investing heavily into the research and development of cloud technology. Read more...Cloud Computing
"Oracle To Discontinue Itanium based Integrity Servers. HP Comes To The Rescue"
CRN Network, March 24, 2011, 1725 hrsA couple of days after Oracle announced its decision to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor, HP said that it will continue to develop and innovate Itanium based Integrity servers with its HP UX OS.
Alleging that Oracle wants to force customers to buy its servers, HP claimed that it has a roadmap around the Integrity servers for more than ten years. The company would continue to support Oracle customers running existing versions of the Integrity servers on both existing and future platforms.
“Oracle continues to show a pattern of anti-customer behavior as they move to shore up their failing Sun server business,” said Dave Donatelli, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking, HP. “HP believes in fair and honest competition. Competition is good for customers, innovation and the marketplace. We are shocked that Oracle would put enterprises and governments at risk while costing them hundreds of millions of dollars in lost productivity in a shameless gambit to limit fair competition.”
In a direct contradiction to a statement made yesterday by Oracle, Paul Otellini, President and CEO, Intel Corporation said, “Intel’s work on Intel Itanium processors and platforms continues unabated with multiple generations of chips currently in development and on schedule. We remain firmly committed to delivering a competitive, multi-generational roadmap for HP-UX and other operating system customers that run the Itanium architecture.”
Poulson is Intel’s next-generation 32-nm, 8-core-based Itanium chip, and is on track to more than double the performance of the existing Tukwila architecture. Kittson is an officially committed roadmap product for Itanium beyond Poulson and also is in active development. Intel® Itanium processor industry momentum will be highlighted in a keynote at the upcoming Beijing Intel Developer’s Forum.
HP moved ahead into second position in the Unix market while Sun lost share and fell back into third since Oracle announced it would acquire Sun in April of 2009. While Oracle refused a formal comment on the issue, a press release dated March 22, 2011 said, “After multiple conversations with Intel senior management Oracle has decided to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor. Intel management made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life.”
The company said that Oracle will continue to provide customers with support for existing versions of Oracle software products that already run on Itanium.
